What August actually is
The city’s own holiday: half of Madrid decamps to the coast, traffic evaporates, hotel prices drop 20–30%, and the reduced-service signs go up on some family restaurants and shops (far fewer each year). Afternoons hit 35–38°C; nights hold near 25. In exchange: no queues anywhere, Veranos de la Villa filling courtyards with open-air cinema and concerts, and the barrios’ August verbenas — La Paloma in La Latina mid-month is the city’s most traditional street party.
The survival structure
Live like the city does: sights and museums 9:00–13:00 (all the big museums are air-conditioned and open), long shaded lunch, real siesta, and life resumed from 20:00 when the Retiro and the terraces fill again. Book a hotel with air conditioning verified in recent reviews (not all budget places’ units work equally hard) and consider one with a rooftop pool — August is when they earn their premium.
The escape hatch
The sierra runs 8–12 degrees cooler: Cercedilla’s pine valleys, Rascafría’s river pools at Las Presillas, Manzanares’ Pedriza charcas, Patones at dusk. Split an August trip — four city nights, two sierra nights — and the heat becomes a feature: you’ll swim in mountain water while the coast queues for parking.
