Museo Sorolla

The painter’s own house and garden in Chamberí — Madrid’s most loved small museum.

Joaquín Sorolla built this Andalusian-gardened house in 1911 and painted Mediterranean light in it until his death; his family gave it to the state with the easels still standing. It is the anti-Prado: ninety minutes, no crowds worth mentioning, and the uncanny experience of seeing paintings hang in the rooms they were painted in.

The garden alone — fountains, tiles, orange trees — justifies the €3. Combine it with a Chamberí wander and a vermút on Calle de Ponzano, ten minutes east.

The minimum you must see

01
Walk on the Beach (Paseo a orillas del mar)
📍 Main studio, first floor — the giant north-lit room he worked in.
02
The three studios in sequence
📍 First floor — palettes, brushes and unfinished canvases as he left them.
03
The Andalusian garden
📍 Entrance courtyard — designed by Sorolla himself, copied from the Alhambra’s.
04
The sketches for Visions of Spain
📍 Ground-floor rooms — studies for the Hispanic Society murals in New York.

Tips

Free Sunday mornings get busy by 11:30; Saturday after 14:00 is the quieter free slot.

It is small — do not save it for a rainy-day filler with luggage; lockers are tiny.

Questions, answered

Worth it if I’ve never heard of Sorolla?
Especially then. He is the best painter of sunlight Spain produced, and the house sells him better than any gallery wall could.
How long do I need?
Ninety minutes including the garden. It pairs perfectly with the Lázaro Galdiano, 20 minutes’ walk east.
How much is a Sorolla ticket?
€3 — and free on Saturdays from 14:00 and all day Sunday.
What day is the Sorolla closed?
Monday. Free Sunday mornings fill up by 11:30; Saturday after 14:00 is the calmer free slot.
Do I need to book?
Rarely on weekdays — walk in. For free Sundays, arrive at opening (10:00).
What is the nearest metro?
Iglesia (L1) or Rubén Darío (L5), both under ten minutes’ walk through Chamberí.
