Spring (March–May) — Ideal Conditions
Spring is one of the two best seasons to visit Madrid. Temperatures climb progressively from 12°C in March to a very pleasant 20°C in May. The Parque del Retiro is in full bloom, the outdoor café terrace season begins, and the city has an energetic, celebratory feel.
San Isidro Festival — 15 May
San Isidro is Madrid's patron saint day and the city's most important annual festival. On 15 May and throughout the surrounding week, there are free outdoor concerts across the city, traditional Madrid costumes (chulapos y chulapas), bullfighting at Las Ventas (the season begins), and a genuinely festive atmosphere. The meadow of San Isidro near Carabanchel hosts the main celebrations. Entry to most events is free.
March: Temperature 12°C. Hotels from ~€55/night. Quieter, good value. Some rain possible.
April: Temperature 16°C. Hotels from ~€65/night. Semana Santa (Holy Week/Easter) brings large crowds and higher prices — book early. After Easter, crowds drop.
May: Temperature 20°C. Hotels from ~€72/night. Excellent weather, San Isidro festival, longer days. One of the best months to visit.
Summer (June–August) — Hot & Busy
Madrid summers are intense. July and August regularly see temperatures of 32–38°C — genuinely difficult for sightseeing without air conditioning and careful planning. The city doesn't shut down (it's not a coastal resort), but many Madrileños leave in August, creating an odd mixture of fewer locals and lots of tourists.
What Works in Summer
- Veranos de la Villa — Madrid's free summer cultural festival, running July–September. Open-air concerts, theatre, cinema and dance across the city. Check the city council website for the full programme each year.
- Museum visits work well — air-conditioned and less crowded in the morning.
- Late nights are genuinely magical — warm evenings, rooftop bars, dinner at 22:00, the whole city alive until 03:00.
- August is quieter for locals but still busy with tourists. Some smaller restaurants and shops close for the month.
June: Temperature 27°C. Hotels from ~€85/night. Pride festival (late June/early July) — Chueca and the city centre become one enormous celebration. Book well in advance.
July: Temperature 32°C. Hotels from ~€95/night — peak prices. Very hot. Outdoor activities best early morning and evening.
August: Temperature 31°C. Hotels from ~€90/night. Slightly cheaper than July. Many locals absent. Some city fatigue.
Autumn (September–October) — The Best Season
Autumn is arguably Madrid's finest season. The heat breaks in September, temperatures become ideal for walking and outdoor dining, the golden light is beautiful, and hotel prices start to fall from the summer peak. The city feels alive again as Madrileños return from the coast and the cultural season (theatres, exhibitions, concerts) gets underway.
October in particular is exceptional. 17°C average, blue skies, autumn colours in Retiro, affordable hotels, and none of the summer crush. If you can only visit Madrid once, October is the answer.
September: Temperature 24°C. Hotels from ~€72/night. Still warm enough for terrazas. Crowds drop from late September.
October: Temperature 17°C. Hotels from ~€62/night. The best single month. Perfect weather, golden light, value improving.
November: Temperature 11°C. Hotels from ~€52/night. Cooler but manageable. Good value. City feels authentic.
Winter (November–February) — Quiet & Affordable
Winter in Madrid is cold but rarely harsh — temperatures average 4–12°C, with occasional frost but almost no snow (it settles perhaps once every few years). The city doesn't slow down: museums and galleries are as good as ever, cosy bars and cafés are full, and hotel prices hit their annual lows.
Christmas in Madrid
Madrid does Christmas well. The lights on Gran Vía and throughout the Centro district are switched on in late November and are genuinely spectacular. The Rastro market (every Sunday) goes into festive mode. Christmas markets appear around Plaza Mayor. The city is crowded over Christmas week and New Year's, but joyful.
New Year's Eve at Puerta del Sol
One of Europe's great New Year's celebrations happens at Puerta del Sol every 31 December. The tradition: at midnight, as the clock on the Casa de Correos strikes twelve, the entire crowd eats 12 grapes — one per stroke — representing luck for each month of the coming year. It sounds chaotic (it is), it's incredibly crowded (up to 100,000 people), and it's unforgettable. Hotels near Sol are fully booked months in advance for New Year's Eve.
February Carnival
Madrid's Carnival in February is a lively street festival centred on Lavapiés and the Centro — parades, costumes, the Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine) closing ceremony. Smaller than Cádiz or Tenerife's Carnival but enjoyable and genuinely Spanish.
November: Temperature 11°C. Hotels from ~€52/night.
December: Temperature 7°C. Hotels from ~€55/night (rises sharply Christmas–New Year).
January: Temperature 6°C. Hotels from ~€45/night. Cheapest month. Quiet, authentic.
February: Temperature 8°C. Hotels from ~€48/night. Carnival festivities.

What to Wear in Madrid by Season
- Spring/Autumn: Light layers — a jacket for evenings, t-shirt during the day. Comfortable walking shoes.
- Summer: Light, breathable clothing. Sun hat and sunscreen essential. Sandals for daytime, but covered shoes for restaurants and clubs.
- Winter: Coat, scarf, layers. It can be genuinely cold, especially with wind. But clear winter days are beautiful.
