Staying Near the Reina Sofía Museum

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is the southern anchor of Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art, 200m from Atocha station on Calle de Santa Isabel. It houses Picasso's Guernica — arguably the most important painting of the 20th century — plus major collections of Dalí, Miró, Juan Gris, and other 20th-century Spanish masters. Metro: Atocha (L1) or Lavapiés (L3).

Free Entry Times

The Reina Sofía has some of Madrid's best free entry windows. Permanent collection free: Monday 09:00-19:00, Wednesday-Friday 19:00-21:00, Saturday 14:30-21:00. Sunday 12:30-14:30. These times get busy — arrive 20 min before to queue. If you can visit mid-week afternoon or Saturday early evening, the free entry periods are the best combination of timing and crowd level.

The Golden Triangle Walk

The Reina Sofía is the southern point of the Golden Triangle of Art: Prado (400m north), Thyssen-Bornemisza (600m north). The three-museum combined ticket (€57.60) is sold at each museum. Atocha area (5 min)

Near the train station. Practical for day trips to Toledo, Segovia. Budget 2-3 stars at €70-110.

Jerónimos (10-15 min)

Adjacent to the Prado. More upscale, quieter, pricier. Best for museum-heavy visits wanting calm evenings.
