Hoteles in Madrid in Winter 2026 — Madrid
Madrid's winter secret: January and February are the cheapest hotel months and the Prado has no queues. The Christmas lights on Gran Vía are spectacular. The cold is manageable (4–12°C).
Winter in Madrid (December–February)
Madrid winter runs 2-10°C — cold but rarely freezing. Snow is unusual in the city (though the Sierra de Guadarrama 60km north gets it reliably from November). The upside: museums have no queues, hotels are cheaper, and the city's Christmas season (late November to January 6) is genuinely special — Christmas lights on Gran Vía, the Plaza Mayor market, and Nochevieja (New Year's Eve) at Puerta del Sol are among Europe's best winter events.
Key winter events
Nochevieja (Dec 31): 200,000 people at Puerta del Sol for the 12 grapes. Cabalgata de Reyes (Jan 5): Three Kings parade. Christmas markets in Plaza Mayor (late Nov-Jan 6). Christmas lights on Gran Vía.
What's cheaper
Hoteles are significantly cheaper Jan-Feb outside the New Year/Christmas spike. February is the best-value month to visit Madrid.
What's better
No tourist queues. Museums accessible at opening time. Free evening museum access more reliably available. Excellent cafés without summer crowds.
Day trip to the sierra: Navacerrada ski resort is 60km north — accessible by Cercanías from Madrid (C-9 line, 1.5h). Cheap skiing compared to the Alps: day passes €30-40. Good for a single-day excursion.
