Parque del Retiro is 350 acres of green in the heart of Madrid — free entry, open 06:00-24:00 in summer. It has a boating lake, the Crystal Palace (glass exhibition hall, free), a rose garden that peaks in May-June, a Sunday artisan market by the lake, and 15 km of walking paths. Metro access: Retiro (L9) from the south gate, Príncipe de Vergara (L9) from the east.

What You Can Do in the Park

Boating lake

€6 for 45 minutes. Row yourself around the lake. Weekday mornings are peaceful; Sunday afternoons are lively. Best in spring.

Crystal Palace

Free entry. Surreal glass-and-iron Victorian structure. Hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions — check the programme.

Rose Garden (Rosaleda)

Free. Best in late May to mid-June when all 4,000+ roses are in flower. One of the most beautiful single sights in Madrid.

Best Neighbourhoods for Retiro-Adjacent Hoteles

Salamanca (north of the park) is the premium family-friendly option — safe wide streets, excellent restaurants on Calle Jorge Juan, direct access to the park via Retiro Metro (L9). Hoteles at €120-160 for 3-4 star.

Jerónimojs (west of the park, between Retiro and the Prado) is the most directly park-adjacent option and puts you within 10 minutes of both the Prado and the Reina Sofía. Budget hotels: €90-130.

Morning in the park tip: Show up at 08:00 on a weekday. The park is almost empty, misty on autumn mornings, and the locals do their morning run here. Completely free. The best start to any Madrid day.

Day Trips from the Retiro Area

The Atocha train station (15 min walk or 2 Metro stops south) gives you access to Toledo (33 min AVE), Segovia, and the rest of Spain. The Prado is also 10 min walk from the south edge of the park — plan a museum visit and park walk on the same day.
