New Year's Eve in Madrid (Nochevieja): The Complete Guide
Madrid's Nochevieja is the biggest New Year's celebration in Spain — and one of the most spectacular in Europe. Up to 200,000 people gather at Puerta del Sol for the countdown, following the tradition of eating 12 grapes in time with the 12 chimes of the Real Reloj (the reference clock for all of Spain). This guide covers everything you need to know.

The 12 grapes tradition (Las Doce Uvas de la Suerte) started in the early 20th century — one grape per clock chime, eaten to bring good luck for each month of the coming year. Pre-packed grape kits are sold at every supermarket and kiosk in the days before. The countdown is broadcast live on every Spanish TV channel. Even if you're watching from your hotel room, you're part of the national moment.

Hotel Booking Reality
New Year's Eve in Madrid is the most challenging hotel booking in the city's calendar. Hotels within 2km of Sol sell out 6-9 months ahead for December 31 nights. Prices run 3-5× normal rates for December 31 (often combined with a December 30 minimum stay). Book as soon as you know your dates — there is no last-minute availability.
Smart alternative: Book December 30 and stay through January 1. Prices on Dec 30 and Jan 1 are significantly lower — the premium is specifically for the Dec 31 night. You get full participation in Nochevieja at the Sol countdown, but save money on surrounding nights.
