IFEMA Madrid Events: The Complete Hotel Guide

IFEMA (Feria de Madrid) is Spain's largest trade fair and exhibition complex, hosting 100+ events annually in its 200,000 m² of halls in the northeast of the city. The accommodation challenge: during major events, the 15-20 hotels in walking distance sell out months in advance and prices triple. Here's how to navigate it.

IFEMA's Major Annual Events

FITUR (January, week 2-3)

World Tourism Market Spain edition — 250,000+ trade and public visitors over 5 days. Hoteles within 5km: sell out 3-4 months ahead. Expect 2.5-3× normal prices.

ARCO (February, week 1)

ARCOMadrid: 85,000+ visitors for contemporary art fair. Book 3 months ahead minimum. Prices 2-2.5× normal.

Madrid Motor Show

Biennial (even years), November. 500,000+ visitors over 2 weeks. The most challenging for accommodation — book 6-12 months ahead.

SIMA (May)

Real estate fair. Mainly trade, lower impact on hotel prices than FITUR/ARCO.

HIP (February)

Hospitality Innovation Planet. Hotel and restaurant industry. 30,000 visitors.

Hotel Strategy: Stay Near IFEMA vs Stay Central

Option 1 — Stay near IFEMA: Walking distance to halls (5-15 min). Hoteles: Hilton Airport, Barceló Torre de Madrid, NH Ciudad de Barajas, NH Collection Eurobuilding (via shuttle). Prices during major events: €150-300+/night. Advantage: zero commute. Disadvantage: you're in an industrial/airport zone — no evening atmosphere, limited restaurant options.

Option 2 (recommended for most visitors) — Stay central, Metro in: Base in Nuevos Ministerios or Sol. Metro L8 direct to Campo de las Naciones (3 stops from Nuevos Ministerios, 35 min from Sol). Prices 40-60% lower. Advantage: real Madrid neighbourhood for evenings. Disadvantage: 35-45 min commute each way.

The Nuevos Ministerios sweet spot: Stay in Nuevos Ministerios (end of L8 line) for the best balance — 3 Metro stops from IFEMA, connected to L6 and L10 for city access, proper hotel options at €90-130/night during events vs €200+ near the venue.

Booking Timeline

FITUR and ARCO: book minimum 3 months ahead. Madrid Motor Show: 6-12 months. Other IFEMA events: 4-6 weeks usually sufficient unless it's a major consumer show. For last-minute IFEMA trips: check availability after 18:00 on Day 1 of the event — no-shows and late cancellations create some movement.
