Staying Near the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza sits on Paseo del Prado, directly opposite the Prado Museum — about 200m apart. While the Prado covers Spanish art from the Middle Ages through the 19th century, the Thyssen complements it with one of the world's great private collections: Impressionists, Expressionists, Dutch Golden Age, and 20th-century masters from Monet to Pollock. Metro: Banco de España (L2).

Free Entry and Tickets

The Thyssen's permanent collection is free on Monday 12:00-16:00. Note: this is the only free day; temporary exhibitions always require a ticket (€13-15 typically). Combined ticket with the Prado and Reina Sofía: €57.60, saving about €10 vs buying individually.

The museum café has a terrace facing Paseo del Prado — one of the best spots in central Madrid for people-watching over a coffee. Significantly less expensive than the tourist restaurants on the boulevard.

The Paseo del Prado Walk

Paseo del Prado is Madrid's 18th-century grand boulevard — wide, tree-lined, with fountains (Cibeles, Neptuno, Canovas) spaced along its length. The walk from Cibeles in the north to Atocha in the south (about 1.5km) passes all three Golden Triangle museums and is one of the best free things to do in Madrid on any day.
