Summer in Madrid (June–August)

June-August in Madrid means heat (35-42°C regularly), blue skies, and a city that comes alive after dark. The morning is for sightseeing (08:00-12:00), the afternoon for shade and AC, and the evening for everything else. Late sunsets (21:30 in midsummer) give you an extra 2-3 hours of pleasant outdoor time daily compared to Northern Europe.

What's great

Long evenings, rooftop bars, free outdoor concerts (Veranos de la Villa), ice cream, terrace culture, reduced museum queues in August.

What's hard

Midday heat is intense (12:00-17:00). Some local restaurants and shops close for 2-4 weeks in August. AC is essential in your room.

Practical tips

Stay in rooms with confirmed AC. Carry water always. Visit the Prado or Reina Sofía in the afternoon heat. Casa de Campo public pools: €4-6, essential for hot days.

The Veranos de la Villa festival runs June-August with free and cheap concerts, films, and performances at outdoor venues across the city. Check the Madrid municipal website for the current programme.
