In practice, the quality ranges enormously — from a coffee voucher and a single-serve croissant (not worth the add-on price) to a proper spread of eggs, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, fresh OJ and pastries (genuinely good value). A proper breakfast near the Prado, Sol or Gran Vía costs €10-15 per person at a sit-down café. A coffee and tostada con tomate at a bar costs €3-5. The calculation: if a hotel charges €15+ per person extra for breakfast, go local unless the buffet is genuinely good (check reviews specifically for breakfast).
Best value play: Look for 3-star hotels in Chamberí and Salamanca that include a proper buffet in the room rate (not as an add-on). These exist and represent good value — a €110 room-with-breakfast beats a €90 room where you spend €20 on breakfast elsewhere.
